As a few of you know, I'm hoping to open my own guitar shop in the future.  To that end, I want to design some helpful posters that I will put around the shop as guides on buying different things.  I've started with one of the most complicated - choosing a guitar.

At this stage, I'm not concerned with the look of the poster.  I'll probably get someone to create a good design for these with my branding when I'm a lot closer to the time.  I'd like to get the content right, and so I'd welcome any feedback on this first draft.  Is there anything major that I've left out?  Is it really far too detailed?  I'd like it to be comprehensive but I know that I tend to be a bit overly detailed / analytical in my approach, so maybe this isn't appropriate for normal people.  I'm hoping to find a couple of them here to tell me what they think!

If this sort of thing is useful, then I'd probably try to do something similar for other items such as amplifiers, pedals, acoustic guitars, strings etc.

Hi Jon, on shape, I doubt if buyers that know what a Firebird or Explorer look like would be reading this poster. I do however think '335' should be included to represent the Semi bodies. Again on pickups, phase selection? Think this might start to put off newcomers. Good luck.

Most of it would've meant absolutely nothing to me when I bought my first one 3 years ago

My only criteria was that it was within my limited budget.

Lot of information there! Presumably this is aimed at the beginner,  in which case I guess budget and basics are everything. My first thought on the quality section, is that if I was a beginner I would want to know that the store I was purchasing from had done all that. In fact, I expect that even now, but as I have more experience am able to understand what to look for.

Thanks for the comments so far.  It's partly aimed at beginners and partly aimed at just creating an atmosphere in the shop where people can discuss and learn from each other, all ultimately, of course, with the intention of increasing sales!  I think it would create interest even from a more experienced guitarist who knows all of this stuff, just to see something like that on the wall of the shop - it would make for a bit of variety and interest.  What I would want is to impel people to come and talk to us  - about anything at all - rather than just come into the shop, mooch around for 10 minutes and then leave.

Even if someone comes in and disagrees with what's on the poster, that's great if they come up and talk to us about it - it'll give us an opportunity to sell something to them!

I'd be looking to do things in the same vein on the website in order to attract people and get some interaction.  The Anderton's videos are the ultimate success story, I think, of doing that, and for sure videos of some sort would be part of the online brand, although I'd try to come up with an angle that's different from everyone else.

This is all at least 2 years away still but I want to gradually pull together some ideas and materials that I will be able to use if and when it happens.

Keep the comments coming!
