If your guitar tech seen my work he'd have nothing to worry about.

Luthiery as an amatuer hobby is great, quite relaxing in the summertime outside sanding and sh*t. My luthery goal this year is to make a neck-through bass or guitar. I have enough timber to build 10 guitars, bad habit once you start.

I really should buy myself a cheap Squire Strat or something off ebay, and take it apart and put it back together. I know the basics of how truss rods work etc, but everytime I do something it makes something else go out.
That guitar of yours looks like a work of art. Amateur hobby my ass!

That's precisely what I did. Setting up is not difficult if you work in the right order and set everything to the manufacturer's spec to start with. By far the hardest part is the refinishing.

Buy two and swap everything over? Then you're pushing for the best guitar with parts you don't know for certain go together well.

Thanks - but I think that two extra guitars on the back of the one I've just bought might cost me an expensive divorce.

Thanks, yes I followed your thread avidly - almost as good as your road trip thread, great stuff. I can set up intonation, height etc easily enough. Truss rod - less so although I get the idea. But I'd really come a cropper cutting a nut or dressing frets. It's stuff like that that I take my guitars into this guy to check over. I have neither the tools, time or patience to ever be very good at anything like that - you want to see the shelves in the house. They're like the ones in that crooked house, where you can roll the penny up them.

Or do what I did and buy a cheap guitar kit (I got one from Thomann).  There's a thread about it somewhere around here.  I still need to do a bit of work on it, though!

Totally agree, this is where I draw the line. Anything that can't be undone needs to be done by someone with the necessary skills. I don't have those.

If a problem can't be corrected by adjustments that's when I would take it to a tech. But in my limited experience of setting up about 10 guitars, improper adjustment is all that needs to be corrected.
