I always thought that the idea of that story was that the world was perfect beforehand (i.e. no old age, disease etc.). After, we end up with the world we know. Kind of like the banishment from the Garden of Eden story. I've never heard the stone-age bit, perhaps that is a particular version with its own embellishments.
