Quite taken aback by how saddened I am about this.
I wouldn't have said he was my favourite author but I had great love for a few of his novels.
I remember reading them on the train up from London to Glasgow and looking forwards to grabbing an unread one from WH Smith. Lots of nostalgia and reminisces mixed in there too.
His book on whisky "Raw Spirit" was a great comfort and escape to me when I was going through a particularly bad patch and when I thankfully came through the other side I treated myself to one of the bottles in the book he rated highly ; "Glennfidich Havana Reserve."
To be honest I didn't like it enough to take me away from favoured tipple "Lagavulin" but I think I'll buy a bottle and get drunk on it in memory of Iain when I next have the opportunity.
Just saw the news on the BBC website, a great shame. I came across him initially via his SF works, and then looked out his other fiction. A massive loss, and terribly sad that he'll not actually see his final work on the shelves as he had hoped.
