They are a very good series but definitely not on the level of LoTR, agreed.
The last book was a bit of a letdown ... a lot of threads were left unresolved or tied up too abruptly or unbelievably. Also, a fairly major contradiction to what we had been lead to believe from a related novel by King (with a hand-wavy excuse for it). But the actual 'resolution' was sound enough, probably about the best you could reasonably expect given the amount of anticipation which had built up amongst fans.
King did freely admit that he was making it up as he went along and almost letting the books write themselves. If he had died in that accident with the van I think that the Dark Tower series (to that point) would have achieved legendary status.
I don't know how well they would translate to the big screen - not very well, I suspect. Certainly a lot of reworking needed to make them work as a movie and you'd need a series of lengthy films too, to do the whole tale justice. |
