Are e-readers still too underdeveloped to be worthwhile?

I got my missus one for her birthday. I was and am amazed by the clarity of it. Much easier to read from than any backlit screen. Much better for reading books than say an iPad for that and many other reasons.

e-ink is brilliant for reading but a lot of people don't seem to realise the advantages it has over LCD technology until they actually see a screen.

You can read entire books on LCD (even on a CRT monitor too if you want) but e-ink is sooo much better for reading.

Yeah it really is a million times better than LCD. You can also read it outside unlike an LCD screen which is impossible to see in direct sunlight.

When they release a colour e-ink kindle i'll get myself one as well. The only problem is the kindle screen is a little small to read the .pdf magazines I uploaded to it. An A4 sized colour screen would be perfect.

I can read on my iPod Touch outside with no problems but I think my next purchase would be a Kindle. I didn't expect it to be so good.

We will soon have a colour E Ink display(Triton) according to E Ink.

Will the next generation of Kindle incorporate the new screen though?

I dunno, I suppose it depends on price, maybe in 2012?

I don't have an ipad, but i know that a larger LCD display such as a laptop is impossible to read in direct sunlight, so I presume an ipad would be the same.

Congratulations   He brought me an I pod so I think I need to see if I can get Kindle running on it to get a taste of e-reading...

I downloaded Thoreau's Civil Disobedience for free, just to see how it works.

I've been reading it in the living room today, and frankly it's easier than a book.  When you have two kids running round, just clicking a button is easier than turning a page, and holding the Kindle is easier than holding a book open at the right page.

Congrats Steve, is it the 3G version? If so, what's the browser like? Is it limited purely to searching for books or can you go online (albeit in black and white) to AVF for example?
