i used to be a voracious reader - i have around 3000 books at home, but after i split with my ex i lost the focus to read any novel - they are now all boxed up in the loft or in my conservatory! ... after a number of years i started reading on my ipad digitally, but still not able to focus on reading in the way that i used to!

When In Rome

On swiping, I had an iPad in the beginning and then one of those Samsung Galaxy thingummies, I got tired with things opening up everywhere when my fingers touched the wrong place, I don't even use smartphones now, I would much rather click on a designated button, you might imagine then that my phine doesn't have fingerprint recognition!

                                                                                                                                                 

When I see someone with a Nokia 3210 it's like seeing a Volvo Estate; trustworthy, reliable, won't ever break down etc and I find myself being Basil Fawlty and that line on Lord Melbury and his tatty suitcases in A Touch Of Class when he tries to explain to Sybil... "Of course, dear, that's the whole point! Only the upper class would carry suitcases like that!"

Flashy

My first taste of fine dining came in my early 20s. Me and two friends went to a really, really nice restaurant for lunch without even thinking about what we should wear. We weren't scruffy by any means, but we were in jeans and t-shirts. We only noticed this when other diners turned up in their Sunday best.

We were a bit concerned we might have made a faux pas initially, but we didn't get any looks or anything, only polite smiles and nods. So either every single better-dressed, richer person there was incredibly polite, or there's something in Basil's claim and, in this case, only the upper class would have dressed like that.

As I do 99% of my reading in the bath, I still use the old fashioned books. When I've been working away I've tried reading stuff on my iPad but it just does 'feel right' to me.

The other reason for sticking to books is that my mate and myself swap books once we've read them and you can't really do that with electronic versions as far as I know.

I read quite a bit of John Grisham and Terry Pratchett growing up quite ad hoc so out of any particular sequence all paper back for less than a pound. When older i purchased the entirety of disk world as a epub and enjoyed every book especially "monstrous regiment"

there is nothing quite like the feel of an old book, and thumbing through it though....

DOBLY

I tend to buy fiction / biographies in hardback as soon as they are released - paperbacks tend to look shabby before I finish reading them.  I only buy something that I want to keep, or lend to a friend.
Books on screen tire my eyes too much - I have only completed one.

Phone and audio book for me. I do about 40k miles a year so am always listening to a book. I then have the text version on my phone at the same time. It's always with me and I just jump to where I am using my preferred reader.
