A good instructor will point you towards free materials and may loan you the highway code etc. You could also spend time going over the theory test syllabus with him but your money is better spent studying on your own and paying your instructor for driving tuition.
I don't know about London but the waiting times for a theory test is around three weeks down here with the practical test a six week wait.
If I were you I would apply for your provisional licence and, while your waiting for it to come through the post, ask around for recommendations for a good instructor. Ring him and book a first lesson for when the licence arrives and also book the theory test. Start studying the highway code today.
Then, once you've passed the theory test, take the instructors advice as to booking the driving test.
