Older Porsche 911 Servicing

Been offered a 2005 911 at a very good price (below the average market price), maybe because it is Speed Yellow, which I actually quite like.

Was wondering if anyone here has got an older Porsche and if the service charges are worth the effort.

It has only 52k on the clock, full service history, 2 owners from new and I only do about 500 miles a month.

Obviously for the same money I could get a newer M5/M3/AMG/S4/S5 etc but always wanted a 911 since I was a kid.

I don't own a 911 but have been looking at getting one for the last 4 years.  Please do a bit of research on 'bore scoring' and 'IMS', these are two big issues that can render the engine useless and repair bills can be very high.  The design of the IMS was changed in 2006 so most people seem to suggest looking at a later car if you can.  However if you are getting this cheap then it might be worth the risk, all I am saying is do your homework so that you know the worse that can happen.

Places like Hartage will do a engine rebuild for £7k-£10k.

In terms of servicing, I don't think it will be much more then an M5 or an AMG.  On the plus side, 911's have not depreciated much (if at all) in the last couple of years.

If you are willing to share, PM the price you paying for it?  I am just curious to see how cheap these can be had.

Yeah I heard about the IMS but not so much on the scoring, thanks for that. That is why I am only looking for relatively low mile cars.

The price is actually in USD as I am buying it in the States, but they track very similar, with the exchange rate a snap shot on autotrader is roughly the same price, although road tax for me is much cheaper .

Also thanks for the link, I'll have a nosy on it to see whats what.

It’s actually Hartech that do the rebuilds in the U.K.  News Flash Quite a bit on their site about possible engine woes.
