As said earlier, lane discipline on the autobahns tends to be much better, allowing for the higher speeds on the derestricted sections. I also think that, because there is a logic behind the German limits, and that's generally pretty clear to see, where there are limits on the autobahns, those limits are respected more. I've also felt when driving in Germany that the HGV's spend much less time in overtaking lanes, which makes it much more possible to have higher speeds in those overtaking lanes. Nothing worse than someone having to be in lane 3 at 65mph, because some mobile chicane is overtaking another at 56.1mph compared to 55.9mph.
I also think the French system of 130kph in dry conditions, 120kph (I think from memory) in wet conditions, makes sense.
My speed depends on the road, how busy it is, and the weather conditions. I tend to limit about 80mph now, as I do my best to keep points off of my licence. However if joining the M25 of a morning, I would be grateful to be doing 40mph! |
