I think Tesco is actually 99 ron. Sainsbury's is 97 ron I believe.

*Edit* Tesco do/did two types of super unleaded

99 Octane - 99 ron
Super Unleaded 97 - 97 ron

Bit old now (2005) so they may have swapped over to 99 ron everywhere by now. I know my local Tescos does the 99 stuff as that's what I use if I don't Optimax.

Tesco is actually 99 Ron, but it's the not often published MON rating this more important and significant... in this case the Tesco BioFuel scores highest then V Power then Ultimate...

I run with V Power mostly for the cleaning of the engine, having recently had to completely rebuild my engine after 75,000 hard miles the valves etc were in excellent condition - hence i'm happy to carry on with it. As an aside my car does about 40 miles more per tank (only 8 gallons) with it and is bit more responsive.

Most JDM cars have a desire for the higher octane fuels, and the euro equivalents tend to have a knock sensor so can adapt and as such would benefit from the V Power fuels etc... mine is having a mappable ECU fitted soon and will be mapped to run with V Power all the time...

On a car like a Type R, Clio 182 i'd recommend the better fuels.

I think with my 1.8 turbo that must be worth a go may even go for a Revo trial to see if it's worth the money.

God yes, a Turbo should benefit a lot.... IIRC the VAG turbo lumps do have a knock sensor aswell so the benefit should be more noticeable.

My car is a lowly NA 1.8 and prefers it

Run a few full tanks through and then go back to normal, that's when you'll really notice the difference.... things aren't instant in this game!

I've not come across a Tesco's (ony tried a couple though lol) that have 99.

It's mostly 97.



Tis for me.  Only 2-3p more and it means less lumpiness in the engine when compared to 95.

Also did 411 miles (Nottingham - Liege in Begium) on 1 tank (45 litres) the other week too with Sains Super

What Car have recently researched this and found no difference in the so called 'Super fuels' and ordinary fuel....

I'm surprised they found no difference putting super unleaded in a diesel.

Top Gear or 5th Gear, can't remember which, did a test on a dyno and found that it only made a difference with high performance cars again around 10-20bhp. And a Ford Focus or VW Diesel ain't high performance, well at least not in my book.

My old Cupra used to love Optimax & YES deffo go for the Revo trial

My new FR TDi loves V-Power Diesel giving around 50 miles more per tank.

Then again i don't pay for Fuel, so i'll always stick with what i think is best for the car i'm driving without having to worry about the cost
