Personally I'd be too embarrassed to even ask this question. You approached a conflict situation where both of you have parked cars to deal with. The BMW takes up position to safely pass the white van before he reaches the bus stop giving you ample time to assess the situation and hold back just as the fiesta following the BMW did for you. Once the BMW was positioned to pass the van it's direction doesn't change. You should have correctly anticipated the reduced space and held back. The BMW clearly arrives at, and deals with, the start of the constriction BEFORE you move out to pass the vehicles on your side. Once you moved to the right the collision became much more likely.
On a UK driving test you would have been awarded a drivers fault (used to be minor fault) for forward planning even if the collision had been avoided.
Not sure why there's so much mentioned of the centre line, door mirrors are more solid than some paint. I would like to think this was a lesson learnt but you have (allegedly) been led to believe that the insurers would agree with you?
