Agreed, bespoke, need disc updates (!), spotty traffic functionality, limited ability to share route etc.

They should be embarassed the free, always up to dates ones are better

It doesn't only have to come in a 7-9 inch tablet format, it could also come in a smaller format, 7-9 inch works for me in a couple of my cars and honestly setup time is under 10 seconds.

Obviously not a lot of appetite for it though......

Still happy with the sat nav in my 3 series. Program route on my phone / laptop and send to car.
I’m happy with my car sat nav. Program route on phone / laptop, send to car, start car, load route, drive off.

Can customise my route with waypoints, pictures, etc and suggest fuel stops en route.

My dashcam hides behind the rear view mirror and is 1080p.

It seems the ideal would be a separate (or two) forward and rearward camera(s) linked to a power hub to which the satnav screen/journey recorder attaches.

Something similar to that can be done with a Android in-car music/media player (they have satnav with the optional GPS antenna), but the cameras they link to are relatively lo-res being for parking.

Biggest problem is that if you want to leave it in your car to catch any nefarious behaviour while parked, all you may get is footage of them breaking in to steal the Phablet.

..or not if they succeed.

My dash cam is effectively invisible to the driver being mounted between the two rear view mirrors.
My sat nav is built in to the dash which is a little low for my tastes.
My ideal would be two cameras (which realistically would only need to be Oxo cube sized) placed front and rear feeding the sat nav screen placed atop the dash similarly to the BMW 3 series.
So playback and map reading etc through the centre mounted screen but as little hard ware in the screens as possible.

it sort of could be done apart from showing satnav and dashcams at the same time but even that could be possible if you could find someone clever enough to write an app to split the screen

for example i have 2 wireless dashcams ( front and rear ) that link to each other and have no built in screens
the dashcams will link to an android device or apple ios device and allow live viewing , footage transfer , instant transfer of collision footage etc
at the moment they are linked to my android phone so as soon as i jump in the car the connect via wifi to my phone
on my phone i could have whatever satnav software that takes my fancy and any other app i would want
the phone could be an ipad , android tablet or an in car android based entertainment with GPS it doesn't matter as long as it has WIFI and GPS  

the clever bit is having split screen to show both at once but i believe somebody with the appropriate programming skills could write an app for that   

the only fly in the ointment is my cameras are not 4K front is 1440p and back is 1080p

in reality i more or less forget about the dashcams until there is an event i want to look at and my satnav is TomTom which i drag out when i need it

You've forgotten that those devices already exist

I had that for many years now on my Android based headunit from China....Headunit is 2DIN and goes in place of the factory fit system. It integrates with my in dash MFD as well with the supplied Audi connector, as with the steering wheel controls. It provides both bluetooth and wifi access. It runs Waze. You can connect any USB based camera which for me is mounted centre of windscreen at the top behind my rearview mirror. You could add a second if you want.

There are thousands of different models on the market to fit your east requirements as to how you want it. And as it is Android and you worked in IT then just add an app for any edge case scenario you will make up in response to my response

Don’t forget that having moving pictures whilst visible to the driver is illegal.
