Hi all,

Thanks for this forum.

I have a Peugeot Expert 1.9d 2006.  I love... mostly, although it has these issues that I cannot seem to diagnose!  They are...

1) When cold it has a slight knock/rattle.  When warmed up this is less
2) When very warm (usually after half a days driving and 100 miles (although it starts before that) it becomes very rough on SLOW acceleration, with a dead spot when pedal is pressed only a little... it then kicks in jalts forward and blows white spoke out the exhaust.  The same through any gear.  When on motorways at about 50-60 mph this is the sweet spot for this and its roughly driving and spluttering with white smoke blowing out to whoever is behind me!
3) There is a smell of exhaust fumes when warm as well
4) If you look at the injectors... the first 3 (from left to right) all look dry and fine, but the 4th has liquid around it... maybe oil or fuel?? Maybe this has something to do with it??

I've taken it to an expert diesel injection specialist garage (very reputable) here in Bristol and they plugged it into their fancy diagnostic equipment and it came back all fine... but the problems persist!  They tweaked the accelerator pedal position only and they said just carry on and put up with it.  They said they can dig deeper if I want but it's expensive and the van isn't worth that much.

If I drive it hard then the issue is barely noticeable, but I don't like driving it too hard.

One local mechanic told me it could be the EGR??  He recommended blanking it off...

White smoke is either steam from leaking coolant, which seems unlikely as it only happens under certain circumstances, or unburnt diesel, which Google tells me is possibly due to:
WHITE SMOKE occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include

Faulty or damaged injectorsIncorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)
I'd have thought your specialist would have identified any injector issues.

Certainly sounds like an injector issue.
The one with oil/dirt around it sounds like the culprit.
If possible, undo the injector fuel supply pipe but don't remove the nut and try to tighten the inner nut before tightening the supply pipe back up.

It's possible the seal at the bottom of the injector is leaking as well.

Did the diesel specialist do a leak off test? That is where you run the engine with tubes attached to each injector and send fuel into containers to measure how much fuel each injector is taking.

The only very accurate method of diagnostics with Peugeot/Citroen is to use PP2000/Lexia 3 for Citroen. The injector performance values can be checked in PP2000.
Check on Peugeot forums for a list of owners of the software in your area....I have it here in Lancashire. Most owners will happily do a test for you.

I'm inclined to think the injector with oil/fuel around it needs a new seal and or the fuel pipe tightening up, but it could also be faulty.
