Well, yes, I do find it handy at work!
It can get in the way though, as the positioning of aircraft HUDs are designed to give an overlay that matches the outside world, so the heading display along the horizon gives a one-to-one image, and the flight path vector (the little aircraft symbol) shows exactly where the aircraft is travelling in the real world outside. In the picture above, you can see that we’ll clear the top of the cloud ahead, something that is difficult to ascertain normally, as the horizon is much lower than we normally perceive when at ground level. Car HUDs have the freedom to be designed in an aesthetically pleasing way, so that was the advancement I was alluding to really; I think it’s really neat that they’re coming to the fore for motorists now - anything that encourages keeping your attention outside of the car has to be a good thing. |
