You're more than likely correct, I was just doing it in its most basic form.

I'm not sure how the weight is distributed in my van, I'll have to do some research...

Whatever it is, I don't think 97 is high enough.

Ford? There should be a plaque on the passenger side B pillar with your G.V.W, train weight and individual axle weights.

Match your axle weight up to the single Kg column in this chart and that's your required load rating.

Even if the dealer didn't fit the tyres, should they have sold it with them on? Or could they just plead ignorant?

That's not the correct plaque. You need to go by the official plate which looks like this

I'd be talking to the dealer.  The XL tyres generally have stiffer walls and are the right spec for the vehicle.  Honestly though, it's more for correctness than any worries it'll cause problems.  They should retail a vehicle with suitable tyres.

That's the one. So you need a minimum load rating of 99 on the front and 100 on the rear, any lower is an MOT failure and you're also at risk of enforcement action if spot checked by the DVSA.

I'm not a tyre or van expert but doesn't this show you should have 235/50 R18 101W tyres on all four wheels of the vehicle?
The dealer may or may not have fitted them but they seem to have sold it with the wrong boots on and I would want them to sort that out.

Thanks all

I've negotiated with the dealer and come to an agreement that I'm happy with, basically I'll end up with four new tyres that I want for about £150.
