Thanks to Davepuma and his link there is also now Option C
Additional 50 miles which will mean refuelling somewhere as my car can do around 350-370 miles on one tank. This one is around 390 and according to Google it takes 9.5 hours to complete.
That option would take me to Loch Ness which I've never seen before with my own eyes, but would mean not using the great A86.
I was a bit disappointed by Loch Ness, roads are nice and quite though. Fort Augusta is a great place to stop for food and a drink.
You get some lovely views near Ballachulish, but from memory the A82 is pretty straight and boring near there.
....but it does get more pretty. However there are lots of tourist buses and even some crazy cyclist you have to watch out for
Enjoy your trip, in the last 12 months I've driven/cycled around Scotland about 4 times, loved it every time, as beautiful as anywhere else in the world I've been to, very envious of your planned road trip
Driving round Scotland is a road trip dream I've yet to achieve. Living on the south coast it takes 8 hours just to get there so on the couple of occasions I've been I've just stayed in one place and not ventured far. Had a very nice trip to Edinburgh over the New Year. I'd like to go in the summer for a week or two in a sports car and really make the most of the great roads and views.
Where on the South Coast?
I've done Aberdeen to Brighton in 8 hours, it's only an average speed of 76mph, so not exactly Cannonball Run speeds.
Getting to Scotland shouldn't take 8 hours from anywhere in England, really.
