So, the car went to the local Volvo dealer yesterday for the throttle unit to be replaced under warranty.

Less than half a mile from home and the car cut-out.  Brilliant.

Having cleaned the throttle housing and replaced the connectors, replaced the wiring into the CEM and now replaced the throttle, it's seems to me the only logical thing left to do is replace the CEM?  I hope thats covered by the warranty as it sounds expensive...

Well Darren...ours went in for a week. Volvo guy couldn't diagnose a fault and so the dealer asked for a second opinion. They tell us the throttle housing needed replaced but were't convinced this solved the problem. It didn't as it cut out twice yesterday. So be going back this week...If you are saying the ETM has been replaced in yours completely, think we should suggest the CEM? Loving all the acronyms Sense this may go on for a while which is annoying. We love the car, just not the cut out! We had a Skoda for a few years before, not a spot of bother, beginning to miss it!

Little update for you Ed...

Volvo dealer had my car for the past week. Fortunately on the drive up there it cut out, as on the test drive with the master technician it drove fine - typical! There was a fault code logged and he was going to check it out and then send all the data to Volvo Technical UK - apparently they can drill down further into the data and check all sorts of stuff that the dealer can't.

Anyway, got a call on Thursday saying that Volvo Technical gave suggested that the problem may have been to do with the throttle connectors and throttle unit being replaced at different times. Their suggestion was to replace both parts at the same time - bizarre! Works undertaken at zero cost.

Collected car today and it drove fine on the way home - the engine revs seem far more stable. However, a 30 mile drive isn't enough to see if what they've done is successful or not - fingers crossed it is because this has been a nightmare!

Will update in a few days...or sooner if it cuts out, lol!

So Darren...two and a bit months later, how are things? Ours is still not right. Back in however like you no codes = no fault. It went in for a service at the beginning of August, all fine for three weeks, then boom...back to light and racing revs, followed by limp mode. It can indeed be dangerous...

Touch wood, it's been absolutely fine Ed.  Wasn't convinced their solution would work just because I couldn't see the logic in it - but then I have zero mechanical knowledge.

I'd suggest you get your Volvo dealer to replace both parts at the same time.

Hi Ed.  Much like you, it's been a year of ups and downs.

Last October the problem returned (so them replacing both parts at the same time didn't work), so took it back to the dealer.  They had the car for two days and couldn't get it to fault - no codes logged either.

This time they really clutched at straws and asked what fuel I used - my response was "the fuel from whatever garage is handy at the time". The Service Manager suggested that because my refuelling is as inconsistent as the fault, that it could be connected - LOL!! He said o should use a Premium brand fuel and see if that makes a difference.

I knew this was desperation on their part and sure enough the problem continued!

Knowing there was little point in going back, we persisted until this June - the point at which the one year guarantee on what they'd replaced was due to expire.

So I bit the bullet and contacted the dealer. This time, there was a new Master Technician, which gave me some hope.  They had the car for a few days and the new guy suggested the fault was as a result of electrical interference and recommended fitting a shroud around the cabling near the throttle body. The part cost £12! It also seemed to me that if they had a part for this specific problem, then it's a known fault?

Anyway, 3 months down the line and its behaved itself - not a single cut-out

HI,

I'm currently experiencing the same on a 28000  mile   2009 vehicle, the garage used the forum which is unusual, I personally feel optimistic on the shroud as does my garage.

I wonder if there is a part number for the shroud?

Thank you
