score 9/10
It's been a big few years for Spider-Man fans: first his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (four movies and counting), the incredible 'Into the Spider-Verse' movie and now a new animated series on Disney XD.
While season one does cover old ground (the familiar origin story, Uncle Ben's 'with great power' quote, Peter Parker's friendship with Harry Osborn/Harry's hatred of Spider-Man. which is encouraged by Norman Osborn), there's enough tweaks in this reboot to keep it fresh. This time Spider-Man (Robbie Daymond) is joined by Miles Morales/Kid Arachnid (Nadji Jeter) and - like all good Spidey stories - Peter's still at school (Horizon High), though he's more boy science genius than awkward geeky teen in this incarnation. There's some notable omissions, with Mary Jane briefly mentioned as the Horizon High mascot and never seen again.
With 26 episodes, there's plenty of time to introduce familiar villains. The first half of season one follows a "villain of the week" formula, which minor villains introduced to battle Spidey. By the second half, we have multi-episode storylines devoted to the Venom symbiote (with Flash Thompson substituted for Eddie Brock), Doctor Octopus's origin, a five-part story with a spider virus giving eight million people spider powers (and introducing Gwen Stacey's Spider-Gwen) and the two-part finale introducing Harry's Hobgoblin.
There's a lot of fun to be had in this series, with Spider-Man wisecracking constantly and becoming cockier when he wears the black suit (thankfully there's no embarrassing dancing like in 'Spider-Man 3'). There's a heavy science theme that may go over some viewers' heads, but it still adds to the enjoyment.
If you're a Spider-Man fan, this series is worth your time.
