This is a really stupid movie! Most of the jokes do not work, and most of the jokes that click, aren't extremely great either. The actors is what brings this material together, and it's certainly not the lead actor Drake Bell. His brand of bad Nickelodeon acting can only take him so far, and he is not good in this (However, he's more professional than any actor from Meet the Spartans). The backup actors like Leslie Nielson and Kevin Hart keep this one barely afloat, along with a few amusing jokes.
Rick Riker (Drake Bell) is a high school nerd who's got his eye on popular girl Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton). When on a school trip, Rick is bitten by a mutated dragonfly, which gives him superpowers, quite similar to those of Spiderman. He must save the girl when the bad guy takes her, and get into wacky adventures that don't make the audience laugh meanwhile.
This really shouldn't have been called "Superhero Movie". A more appropriate title would be "Spiderman: The Spoof". Unlike the Scary Movies, this one focused almost entirely on being a spoof of Spiderman, with a tiny bit of X-Men thrown in just to show of the comedic abilities of Tracey Morgan and Regina Hall (from all 4 Scary Movie's). Unlike a few other recent spoof films, which were so bad they will remain nameless, this had pretty good timing on it's jokes, and it didn't try to smash together too many movies. The slapstick was done pretty well, but it's all been done before, and it's been done much better. Very few of the jokes are lingered on too long, which is a big positive. Some lines were taken right out of other parody films, such as a joke with Leslie Nielson, straight out of "The Naked Gun part 2 1/2". There were too many jokes relating to internet sites, such as 2girls1cup, youtube and Myspace. Way too often, "Superhero Movie" goes for the easy joke, so it had the potential to be better...it just wasn't.
My rating: * 1/2 out of ****. 75 mins. PG-13 for language, sexual/crude humor, drug references.
