I'm a long-way from being Owens' biggest fan (though I have met him a couple of times and heard him speak at a dinner) and (and this makes me VERY unpopular and a minority in Wales) this he's past his best and nowhere near the world #1 ref, but, speaking as a neutral, I think those were both correct calls. The first one, the player clearly ran in front of the ball carrier (putting himself offside), and the one in the rolling maul George (?) clearly loses possession of the ball, which is gathered by the player in front of him.
I've lost count of the number off times I've stood on the terrace screaming at the ref believing he's made a blunder with a decision, only to watch back on TV and find he was dead-right.
What concerns me most about rugby is the repeated reliance on the TMO at televised games (internationals, Pro14, Premiership, etc) and how people who then go and watch lower-level games expect the same level of observation, and when you're reliant on only 3 people (ref & 2 ARs) you'll never get it. |
