Not usually my genre, however...

I am a big movie and TV fan, but rarely watch horrors. I'll be absolutely honest, I watched this movie and subscribed to Shudder for one reason only: Rose Williams. After watching Sanditon, I absolutely love her.

What I particularly love is how Rose can portray, with her eyes, everything her character experiences as the story unfolds.

She also tends to play naïve, humble, kind, sweet, loving and loveable characters who end up having to be tough, determined, resourceful, mature and even kickass when required.

I'm probably not the best to review a movie of this genre, but will try to be honest, unbiased, fair to all and not give away too many spoilers.

Overall the movie is good, and not to be missed. The genuinely scary bits, especially of Rose doing contortions etc, are thankfully (for me) not too frequent and prolonged, but I did marvel at Rose and how they filmed these scenes.

The rest of the time, it's a creepy, cold and generally unfriendly atmosphere that poor Val (Rose) a first day nurse has to contend with on her new job. There are power cuts occurring in Britain, so at night the hospital becomes a maze of dark corridors and secrets. We see occasional flashbacks to Val's childhood and perhaps clues to her obvious fear of the dark.

The interspersed creepy music and sound effects remind you periodically to not get too comfortable, as something is obviously lurking and something sinister is in store. The visuals are dark a lot of the time, but what do you expect in a creepy movie? I think the director and crew have overall done well on a limited budget.

What I like about this movie, is that once you get past the confusion/fear, this is ultimately a film about good conquering bad, personal vindication and spiritual triumph.

score 9/10
