The association to the original series is a tremendous insult to the franchise that started everything. The acting is abysmal and the Shaolin mystique has become a far-fetched and ridiculous farce of itself.
Nicky is not only egotistical, but she grandstands her Mary Sue abilities as if she's some sort of short-trained pariah of perfection. Her snarky and self-centered observations of those around her are not only brazen, but they embody everything that the Shaolin spiritual journey of enlightenment are against.
After seeing the first episode, it is extremely and painfully obvious that there is a shallow narrative to connect to ancient Chinese mythos through desperate imagery through a spoiled and over-powered "girl power" Mary Sue for the sake of promoting feminist empowering overtones.
The hopelessly contrived plotline leaves the viewer to wonder if there's any emotional investment at all. No one seems to have a real conflict, or relatable hardship to overcome, except for Nicky's fad interest in Kung Fu for the sake of tracing her Asian roots back to China. The gravity of her commitment is laughable at best. Conveniently for her, she has seemed to learn all she needs to know in the span of two years to have FUN beating up 'bad guys' like it's just no big thing.
There is no soul in this stinkbug. We wanted GRASSHOPPER.
