Beautiful European backdrop to highly engaging love story

Al Pacino was brilliantly cast for Bobby Deerfield. He plays a superstar with consummate ease. As in the Godfather, where his character is surprisingly similar, to watch him is to be amazed at his casual demeanour. Honestly, just to watch the way he saunters across a road holding a bag of groceries is unique, almost dangerous. Marthe Keller is also supreme as a vulnerable woman, sheltering from a horrible truth, unbeknown to Bobby, behind a veneer of wild sociability and brutal honesty. Their love affair is magnificent, but so too is the cinematography. The locations chosen were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a movie. If you are planning a trip to Europe then see this film first. I loved the production values too, cicadas chirping or the play of lights as we traverse tunnels. The story is profound. At one point Keller interrogates Pacino almost as if she were a psychiatrist, neatly turning the tables. It is a pretty long movie, and we could have done with more of the racing circus, there was a sub-plot that went nowhere, and a lot of the soundtrack is lame even for its day (though a good example of muzak for that time), but all in all this movie is too perfect to dock it more than a point. Great European romance.
