Shiva Baby (2020) was written and directed by Emma Seligman.
It starts with a woman having sex with a man and getting paid for it. No problem.
I has a low-key Lesbian context. No problem.
We are treated to every stereotype about New York Jews. Problem.
Shiva is the name for a portion of the ritualistic Jewish funeral traditions. If we are to believe Ms. Seligman, during Shiva, Jews eat constantly, ask about why a young woman is not eating, tell her she looks wonderful, and ask her if she's anorexic. They gossip about each other and each other's children.
Then they eat some more. This is very different from the experiences that I've had in similar situations.
This movie has an IMDb rating of 7.2. My decision to raise it to a 3 because the acting was pretty good, and the film was professionally made. If you love stereotypes about Jews, this is the movie for you. If not, stay away.
We saw this film as part of ImageOut, the otherwise excellent Rochester LGBTQ Film Festival. (This year shown virtually.)
