This virtually unknown (to non-horror fans in the U.S.) Italian film has quite a bit to offer. Shot in stark black and white and usually presented in Italian with subtitles, it is filled to the brim with style and intrigue. Roman plays a young American (!) visiting Italy who stumbles into several troublesome and threatening situations in an amazing amount of time. Her first day in the country includes a drug smuggling, a death from illness, a mugging and a vicious murder by stabbing! (These events are implausible and unreal, but somehow do not detract from the film very much!) Soon the audience is behind her as she attempts to sort out all the pieces to a surprisingly complicated puzzle. Logic and reality are not always at the forefront of the script, but style, mystery and suspense go a long way to providing an hour and a half's entertainment. Roman is a lovely and talented lead. American Saxon convincingly does his own talking. The other cast members are strong as well and help create a baffling, intriguing tale. Two drawbacks are that a) Saxon doesn't get to show his body at all in a beach scene and b)the Italians sometimes talk so fast that the subtitles fly by like crazy. This occasionally makes it difficult to read and view the film simultaneously and both elements can be important in following a story.
