Heights, the final film from Ismail Merchant productions was released in the summer of 2005 and was in my opinion one of the most underrated and under-seen film of the year. Heights stars Glenn Close in yet another role that she makes into her own as well as several actors that prove their acting chops in the film such as Elizabeth Banks, James Marsden, and Jesse Bradford. The film shows the audience a glimpse into the lives of several characters within urban New York. The themes of relationships between mother and daughter, current and past loves, impossible loves, and also the way strangers interact all are put before the viewers and play into the plot as it unfolds. It is a story about people figuring out who they really are, what they want and how sometimes settling is the easy thing to do when one does not want to confront the obvious. A very beautiful film with the great New York scenery it is easy to watch and care about the characters as the film progresses. A good film always raises questions within its audience and this one is no different.
