Once again the "critics" led me astray, and I waited until now to see this fascinating film. Jodie Foster is fine as the strong-willed British teacher who tries to civilize, at least according to Western standards, the King of Siam and his kingdom. The filming was done in Malaysia and it is nothing short of superb, for the most part. Good story, good acting, some action, the bridge is blown up near the end to eradicate the villain. I never saw the 1956 "King and I" with Brenner, so I can't compare the two. Taken on its own, this 1999 version is a fine film.
09Dec2004 addendum: Since my earlier comments, I have spoken with several friends who have also seen this movie recently, and all the impressions follow a common thread. This is a fine movie and does not deserve the occasional bad review.
