I just watched "Rosa Morena" as part of the opening night of The Brazilian Film Festival of Toronto. I was not expecting much of this movie after reading the festival program: Thomas, a Danish in his forties desperately wants to be a father. Maria, is beautiful, charming and pregnant, yet she is very poor to support her unborn baby. The plan is simple, Thomas will pay Maria and bring her baby to his native country. However, Thomas becomes emotionally involved with Maria. Yeah, too lame, predictable...NOT REALLY. This film is dense and delicate. The main reason for that is the amazing performance of Dutch actor Anders W. Berthelsen as Thomas, a successful architect. He has the ability to show his naive, sweet and "good guy" in a foreign country and also the sadness, caring, doubt of his character.
