Throughout his life, perhaps the best known actor in Hollywood was the late great Charlton Heston. In his long and notable repertoire are the grand masterpiece films which of course were stories of the famous men in history he portrayed. But to his credit is this humble, unlikely offering which in my opinion, truly personifies Heston at his best. The story is that of " Will Penny " an aging, lonely, drifting cowboy making his way through life. After a long and arduous cattle drive, he finds himself unemployed and seeking work with his two friends, Lee Majors as 'Blue' and 'Dutchy' played by Anthony Zerbe. Leaving his friends in a small town he travels alone, only to be bushwhacked by a murderous group of Rawhiders led by 'Preacher Quint' (Donald Pleasence, excellent performance and Bruce Dern) and left for dead. He is eventually helped by a stranded woman and her son (Joan Hackett) who remind him of the briefness of life. With a plethora of fine actors, this small, but memorable movie is in many ways superiors to his other works. This was Heston's personal favorite. Easilly recommended. ****
