A soul-stirring story of how a family, touched by tragedy and grief, find their individual ways to heal, to grow and to face the future together.
13 year old Tom's father dies suddenly. His mother struggles to keep the bank from repossessing their home, and with no real job prospects his older brother leaves to join the army. Tom doesn't cope well and liberally sprays muck against the bank building from a manure truck. His subsequent community service brings him into contact with Al, a gentle and seemingly stoic Yorkshire Dales park ranger.
After the initial reluctance on Tom's part to work and engage, a friendship and respect blossoms naturally between the two, allowing Tom to mature and come to terms with his loss.
The beauty in this film is not only in the stunning backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales. It exists in the emotional tensions, struggles and redemptions of the characters. You will be pulled into the emotional landscape by the honest and believable characters - and journey with each of them, laughing, empathising and crying to the final credits.
A film I will watch over and over again for its artful layering, authentic dialogue and the sensitive credible acting. This true Brit film will leave a lasting impression. More films like this please...
