For a long time, this was my favorit adaptation of the novel. The basic explanation - the admirable performance of Richard Chamberlain, saving a film full of good intentions but not exactly example of great performances. Because, it is only a sketch. Nice but not more. Chamberlain is the axis, for acting, costumes and the clothes of photography, and the effort of Donald Pleasance or Louis Jourdain to sustain the film is lovely but not always succesfull. A film about revenge, using a too simplified story, proposing a not significant adaptation but a good invitation to read the novel. And , maybe, that is enough.
