Midbuget (?) movie that has enough effects to be a large buget movie. The effects aren't aced, but if you tweak your settings down in brightness and gamma u'll enjoy it more as the effects are overexposed. They're basically good enough, some decent ones (like the spaceships that are either bought from whichever studio made the gfx for Independence day or from SG-1 (slightly remodeled).
There are also some quite good effects. It is a let down in the martial arts/hand to hand combat portion where the usual impossible odds are to be viewed coupled with tremendous lack of skill from the antagonists. What keeps this movie above a 5 is the actors, which border on pulling it off alltogether.
The editing suffers a bit even though i understand the effort it must have taken getting the movie together, sometimes less is more could have been the route to go. More toned down scenes also lends a little reality to it as the odds aren't completely stacked and the heroes don't have to overcome every enemey by themselves.
Overall it is alot of action and better/alot more effects than anticipated, if you want a sci-fi to sit back to a saturday night with some mates you can do worse.
If this director gets learns from this movie and in the next one tweaks it towards higher reality (yes, i know it's a spacewar, but i mean in hand to hand, odds for protagonists and darken it) I would be looking forward to the continuation.
If you ahve watched your bit of sci-fi you will recognise more than a few elements, effects etc. THey don't really disturb the movie as they're still tweaked and decently well made.
