John Wayne as a police detective in Seattle, investigating a friend's murder while uncovering corrupt drug smuggling activities within the police department. Not a tough sell for a crime-drama, though it's a little sad to see the Duke (overaged and just a bit weary) forced into imitating Clint Eastwood, or Steve McQueen from "Bullitt". In order to get some crucial information out of Colleen Dewhurst, for example, Wayne has to submit to her sexual advances; a quick jump cut to the morning after has Wayne bringing Dewhurst breakfast in bed (whatta guy!). Eddie Albert, as the police Captain, is kept continually on the edge of an anger-meltdown, his eyes popping open and his mouth crooked and tight. The script, by Lawrence Roman, is certainly no great shakes, but John Sturges' direction is swift and straightforward, and the car chases and police smackdowns are easy to take in a tepid, reassuring way. **1/2 from ****
