Of all the famous songstress biopics down through the years, none works so well as this one. Andra Day is Billie Holiday's vocal equal. The veritably bottomless dark depths of USA race relations are deftly plumbed. BH was a consequential civil rights leader. There is nothing gratuitous about the sex scenes: they are true-to-form for someone who has suffered early sexual abuse. The period look is fine. (A few of the cars are too new, and the Feds did not yet have ¼" tape recorders in '47.) The wardrobe is a feast for the eye. A complete triumph.
