Richard Harris plays Fallon, a bomb disposal expert. a man weary of his job, his world and his life. he lives on the edge where every second on the job may be his last so he does as he pleases.
this is Harris playing himself, hard living, hard drinking and on the edge of today - not caring whether tomorrow comes or not.
a bunch of bombs are discovered on a luxury cruise ship, the bomber, a man calling himself juggernaut demands half a million pounds (hey, it was a lot of money in the 1970's!) but they fly in Fallon and his team, parachuting out of a Hercules looking like Action Man.
the ship is commanded by Omar Shariff and has his loyal helpful crew including a ships entertainment officer playing exceptionally well by Roy Kinnear, who even manages to do a joke about The Titanic totally straight faced and it doesn't get a laugh. (He references the film "A Night To Remember", An oldie about the sinking of Titanic) and a porter who pretends to have an accent.
One of the police chasing juggernaut just happens to have his wife and 2 children (annoying son who should have been killed in the explosion that killed the porter. starting a trend in annoying kids who don't die in films that continues today in films like Jurassic Park). He is at the mercy of juggernaut, just like the captain of the ship worrying about all his passengers.
This film is excellent.
The bombs that can detonate in many ways. the phony front and Fallon's best and closest friend getting killed trying to defuse one of the bombs. Fallon thinking about getting drunk then deciding to defuse those bombs regardless of what happens.
And the reveal of Juggernaut, an excellent twist.
Well worth a look, despite it's age.
It could be remade and most likely be done very well providing the character of Fallon was well cast.
