Oh, the TV universe sure does love its widowers. Nothing says 'instant good guy' like the one who is still pining for his tragically dead, absolute-saint-of-a-wife. Toss in two daughters who he doesn't even begin to understand and you have yet another nonsensical sitcom. And this one is just a carbon copy of the regular Unicorn, which is really bad, too.
But this one has been PCed to death. The dead wife was mixed race, so naturally her quirky white father lives with his black Unicorn son-in-law and his kids. Why is it in the TV universe, for a father-in-law to live with his adult kid and their spouse (or widower) the oldtimer has to be grumpy and/or immature and/or just plain weird, with behavioral issues and/or a personality disorder? Don Johnson is old enough but terribly miscast here. And then there is the Unicorn's boss at work, a black female, of course, because in the TV universe EVERY show has a black female in a position of high authority. Every show. I dare you to name a current show without one. Not that it's a problem but it's so universal it has become preachy.
Overall this show is really bad, which means for a TV sitcom it's still above average. It's just that average is way down there, nowadays.
