Clearly hoarding is widespread. some of the "hoarders" are clearly mentally ill, in a serious way, some are mean spirited, & aggressive- some are abused, damaged people- but parents dying, everyone has to experience this, a dead or cheating spouse, happens to many, or a (bad) divorce doesn't justify this downward spiral. we all face tragedies and stress.

some can be dug out with help, some can't.

they don't differentiate between, compulsive collecting, shopping, dumpster diving, and piles of, actual trash and dirt. Cluttered, compulsive buying or collecting, is not equivalent to living in trash. this aspect is particularly disturbing.
Usually. I agree with specialists.

a few times not

on who spent a million$, yes a million on Bears & dolls. agrees to put 3 truck loads in auction. changes her mind the next day. they made a mistake - should have told her to choose her favorites- 10 even 25- there are so many even 50, that would go on shelves in a 2nd bedroom.. keep her favorite- whatever the cost- or sale price. and let her focus on these. she paid $5K for one bear- she admits she paid 3 or 4 times the value on eBay auctions. Have her choose and focus on a small collection. she could have made maybe 10Ks
.
another that was a mistake, 20 year couple, the man is the hoarder. he has ruined her house, loaded in garbage & worthless stuff. 1ks in costume jewelry. being someone who has bought & sold, for years. there is a market- he jewelry looked organized. especially signed designer. they put on a table& said a few $100 or his partner. few 100 could be a few 1K, or 10K -20K- he could put Lots on line with lesser pieces- whether 10-100-200, people will buy when you put together a good deal- maybe with a few signed piece. and the better signed pieces, if he has them, if he got rid of everything else and kept the jewelry, the house would be clean. they don't call in an auction appraiser. If he agreed not to buy any more-and list some to sell. Not seeing the pieces, I can't say if it was 25 piece lot of 100- a few $100 for one piece. some designers are few hundred. He pushed back on the jewelry, because these people didn't realize that this was saleable & again it looked organized. . they wanted to Junk it all, not even donate to a thrift shop. no wonder he pushed back. yes, he hoarded and destroyed her house, damage that wouldn't be fixed because there was so much garbage piled up. she is partly responsible because she didn't clean up. it wasn't all him.
so these "professionals" misjudged this issue, which could have been resolved. and no wonder he couldn't agree. I was OFFENDED.

Having watched hoarder refuse to give up garbage, and broken dirty stuff. or meaningless piles of clothing, broken toys, broken chairs, rusty tools; old broken appliance, etc. even unused in boxes or tags. these 2 examples I think they really misjudged and didn't properly deal with the problem. there may be some others. I say, if there are really anything of value, get appraiser, and let them focus on on small group- with an understanding they can't add to it

yes to me the worst are the animal hoarders, unable to take care of them, in dirty unhealthy conditions, sick, keeping dead bodies. the worst.
