2020 is an ongoing nightmare, but two things have risen from the ashes of the dumpster fire that are more perfect than I could have even imagined. The first is, of course, Rudy Giuliani's ongoing freefall into madness and irrelevance. The other is this.
This show means so much to me. It aired from 1993 when I was 7 until 1998 when I was 12, so I'm the perfect age to have both watched it as a child and laughed at the slapstick, but also grow more aware of the world and start to see that there's real substance to it too. It was the first time I saw a cartoon that was more than mindless bright colors for small children.
Adult animation is everywhere now, but 20 years ago, cartoons were for kids, period. (Yes, I'm aware anime has existed far longer than that, but not mainstream cartoons.) Yakko, Wakko, and Dot broke a whole lot of that ground and did a ton of work toward shaping how we see animation today.
I am absolutely tickled to be watching it, and the very first scene is a beautiful homage to Jurassic Park (with original score!) and I'm not sure I'll make it through this dry-eyed. This is pure, unadulterated nostalgia like I have never experienced before. Bravissimo.
