Working class poor but honest, heroic, long-suffering; black better still; landlords wicked; gays good even if middle class; females universally better than males; aristocrats cowardly and black- hearted: the Village is a splendid ensemble piece but I despite what Sam says it is quite clear that Maxine Peake and John Simm are the driving force. The scene at the family dining table where Grace Middleton collapsed emotionally was such a powerful piece of acting by Peake and was almost too painful to watch. The Village is unmissable TV: quality acting, wonderful script, serious. This is a fine series and I hope the BBC has the courage to stick with it.
