The beginning of this series, whose plot and interesting historical setting looked very promising, has been surprisingly unengaging. The language jars, the scenes seem disconnected, the characters appear wooden. Some of the actors' make-up looks unrealistic. This is so disappointing after the wonderful production of Wolf Hall, which was fantastically atmospheric and gripping, despite the inevitability of the storyline. I can't quite make out what makes this new drama from such a renowned, award winning writer seem implausible, but this doesn't stand up to comparison with many of Jimmy McGovern's previous television dramas and I don't think I'll watch the second episode.
