Last year a girl in my high school got pregnant - she was sixteen - and she did it on purpose.
Why? Well, she'd seen the show 16 and Pregnant and figured that having a baby at that age would be melodramatic and fun, like living in a film. She didn't give a damn about her baby, she only got pregnant to get attention - and it worked. Within days she found herself getting money from her boyfriend, getting to leave school and sit at home all day, getting to plan a baby shower and getting gifts and attention from her peers and her family. Her baby wasn't a child anymore, it was an accessory. Now the baby is being raised by his grandma and the girl... well, to be honest I haven't seen her in ages because she ran off with some guy, not wanting to take responsibility after the novelty wore off.
Reality shows are bad enough, the majority of them are stupid and a waste of time and money. But 16 and Pregnant makes being a teenage mom look like a game, when the truth is that often the boyfriend deserts the mom, she has to drop out of school, gets laughed at by her former friends and ends up getting lousy part-time jobs for money after the baby is born. Many teenage mothers miscarry, or have to give up their baby for adoption because raising a child is expensive. It isn't easy and it isn't fun, and this show is wrong on so many levels.
The girls featured on it are usually spoiled and self-centered, and everything is always dramatic and fake in each episode. God, first it was "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo", then "Keeping up with the Kardashians" and now this garbage? Reality shows are cheap and that's why there are so many of them on television these days. They can be filmed on a cheap digital camera instead of a professional film camera, they don't need any effects or elaborate soundtrack, and some of them only cost a couple of bucks to produce. It's sad, but that's the 21st century, the age of laziness and stupidity. 16 and Pregnant is just another nail in the coffin for intelligence in the television industry. :(
