Taking place a few days after the events of "Zeta Gundam" the Titans are defeated but the AEUG has suffered many losses including the catatonic loss of Kamille while a new threat looms over the horizon in the form of Neo Zeon lead by Haman Karn from "Zeta Gundam". While docking at the colony Shangri-La the AEUG recruits a bunch of teenage junk collectors lead by the happy go lucky Judau Ashta to fight off Neo Zeon and bring peace to the space colonies and Earth.
"ZZ Gundam" gets a bad reputation among Gundam fans for being too campy and less serious than its predecessor which had a high body count and a downer ending. The first half of the series is very campy with the regular "monster of the week" type of situations and over the top villains that you cant take seriously. But around episode 20 the comedy is toned down and the show gets darker and better but never to the heights that Zeta went to and reaches a satisfying conclusion.
Not much changed with the animation as the show was made a year after "Zeta Gundam" but the animation still looks good but dated.
"ZZ Gundam" is a good Gundam series but not the best. But it doesn't deserve its bad reputation that its garnered over the years. I say check it out.
