This classic, "film noir" type television show was the perfect counterpart to the 85 novels written by Erle Stanley Gardner (who personally picked Raymond Burr to play the lead role). The first three seasons were the best: Burr, slim and trim as Perry Mason, had a zealous, gritty edge to the character, matching his personality in the novels. Barbara Hale was wonderful as Della Street, and the late William Hopper completed the tight-knit group as private detective Paul Drake.
Rounding out the cast were William Talman as district attorney Hamilton Burger and Ray Collins as Lieutenant Tragg (both miscast, if you ever read the novels). Everybody who was anybody hankered to guest-star on this popular series, perfectly slotted for Saturday nights at 8 pm on CBS. One of the ten best television programs of all times, it is worthy to have been made available now on DVD.
