This was one of Morgan Freeman's first starring roles. He made this film the year before his Oscar for Driving Miss Daisy. He gives an awesome performance as bare-knuckled principle Joe Clark. He is funny, dynamic, intense and more then a little bit abrasive. I cannot help but notice how often everyone shouts in this film. It does make it more intense though like in the scene where he takes that boy up on the roof and tells him to jump. John Avildsen makes this a feel good film just like Rocky and the Karate Kid. He shows how one person who cares can make a difference.
