A decent video transfer for an older/long ago released film into dvd. The canadian bilingual disc is the one to get as certain actors in the movie said their lines in French and then was overdubbed in english. Therefore the french language track contains the actual french dialogue. Pretty cool. This is one of my favourite Polanski films as it is morbid to the extreme (hence you may experience a reflex type of reaction with laughter) and absurd in a great way. A classic yet left of center twisted tale of possible haunting and one definitely about a descent into madness. There's some really out there scenes and like Repulsion, Polanski masterfully depicts with super accuracy certain traits that one exhibits when they go through mental illnesses and stressors that the main characters do in these two psychological horror films have. A must have for any art film lover's collection. Here's hoping that the Criterion collection will restore and release this film in its proper technical glory on blu-ray disc in the near future!
