From the first episode it deviates greatly from the typical trope found in this genre, making the whole series a little darker as there is a cost the quickly becomes apparent with being the "chosen hero" which makes the whole series worth the investment.
It is filled with some of the more generic tropes as well (little bit of a harem slant, etc) but even that's handled a bit differently / better than most anime I've seen to date.
Please not however, It's important to hold out through out the current story arc, there are a few episodes that won't exactly mesh well at first, and borders on the "Luke" (Star Wars reference, the whinny hero) front but in the end those episodes are critical to developing the humanity of the character and showing the growth. (Additionally the more I thought about it the more realistic the "weakness" becomes)
TL:DR
Another "Another World" entry, but a surprisingly fresh and enjoyable take on the genre.
