Advice on this build?

Hi folks, I'm debating building a new system, below is the items i'm considering. NB I've already have a vega RX 56 and an 850 watt PSU

Questions:

The AM4 boards seem to have different numbers B450/X470/A320, what is the benefit of one over the other. Ive also seen in reviews some folks saying, they had to update the bios before the cpu could work, and had to order a test cpu from AMD to do this, is the mobo ive selected got the latest bios to avoid that hassle?

RE memory, would a one stick of 16gigs be a better option than 2 8gig modules? Im thinking more room for upgrades with the one stick.

CPU: This comes with a wraith prism cooler, has anyone used this? What was idle temps? From comparisons, there seemed to be little difference between the stock cooler and the hyper evo 212?


Any advice on this build would be greatly appreciated.

A320/B450/X470 is the name of the main chip on the board. Generally those higher up the range will have more capabilities, although motherboards. They're primarily useful as a way to find any features restricted to a particular level, otherwise you can ignore them and just focus on what the motherboard is capable of.

Only having one memory stick in a system halves your memory bandwidth. You don't say what you're using the system for, but when you're going so high end on other components it doesn't make any sense to have single channel memory.

Are you sure about such a large case?

You've chosen the current top Ryzen CPU and quite a budget motherboard, i would go for one of the X470 boards as they will give you more headroom especially if you want to overclock in the future also what other components are you planning storage etc ? as the better the board the more features, example i went for the MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon as i wanted to use M.2 drives but didn't want to lose any PCIe or Sata ports which is what happens with the more basic boards !

Also as @EndlessWaves says that is a big case and unless you are planning water cooling loops etc then probably overkill.

As for cooler i think the Wraith Prism is OK but again can be bettered especially if overclocking, i use the Corsair H100i Platinum RGB AIO and it is really effective at keeping temps down, i managed a 4.1GHz overclock on the Ryzen 1700X at a stable 60 degrees.

Edit: The 2700x will work fine with X470, B450 without needing a bios update though its worth updating the bios once the chip and memory are installed before installing the OS.

Thanks for the replies. Yes that case is huge, I believe there's a smaller version the 540. I have a mid tower case at present, a gigabyte sumo omega, and I hate that a lot of the psu cables have to be all over the place, so I liked the dual chassis which separates the psu. I'll be using 3.5 hdd drives, two 1st for the interim. As for usage, it'll be mainly a media set up, I'll not be over clocking, that board I picked has plenty of expansion slots below the gpu, I only need gpu, and two pcie slots for satellite tuners. My sound comes from a denon avr, so no soundcard is needed.

Ill take a look at the x470 boards, and switch to 2 8 gig modules. One concern is that the cases that big brute I listed and the smaller version, don't come with dust filters for every fan mount.

Forgot to say, your running 60c idle, is that not excessive? My Asus m975a evo rev 2.0, states at idle (with the hyper evo 212),idle temps of about 33 for cpu (fx6 series) and 29 for mobo.

Didn’t say that was idle, that was under full load all cores

Nothing wrong with a huge case (bitchin), in fact they cool better. Dump the Corsair crap and get Gskill instead.

Also dont forget that July sees the new Ryzen 3 arriving which means that prices for all the old Ryzen 2 should drop further, my advice, for what it is worth, is wait for a couple of months.

I have been eyeing up a new rig (currently on [email protected] 4.2) but have decided to wait it out to see what the new gen is going to bring to the table and for the 2 series to drop a little more.

Finally, there are other places with cheaper prices or free games included, so worht shopping around.
