Well, I don't know all the in's and out's of it from your side, but if you were then I, and other editors, could use your music in broadcast productions.

Could net you some cash, as you'd be paid each time one of your tracks is broadcast.

As it is I can't use any of these, I'm afraid.

Isn't the downside that amateurs shy away from PRS as it means they need a back-office to process and submit payments for every playing?  This is OK when you are a distributor who knows where  a film is screening   ( Since the cinema-circuit is under yr control ),
However, if I give someone a copy of my Epic there is no knowledge of the PLAY time/place - let alone any Copies they can make -since no amateurs can afford to "protect" their DVDs  ( And some folks can crack the commercial Protection, it's said ).

EM can have two sets of Music . . .  if he writes something for doug_1986 's  movie, then he's paid like any other performer, by the Terms of the contract . . . . I don't understand why PRS is necessary - PRS doesn't pay the Grip, nor the guy that turns over the sheet music.
PRS is very active in the Music Industry, so perhaps that's where they hold strength as consumers like to listen to music made famous by films, for example The Sound of Music . . . which must still bring in payments from Broadcasters and Event organisers.... thereby justifying a system that's long overdue an update. Fans that attend Glastonbury, etc. can record/broadcast using their phones - Where's that paid-for?

Anyone?

From what I understand, the composer still holds rights. So, for instance, you could have a model whereby the music is free to use in home movies, amateur productions and by students, whilst broadcast pays like normal every time it airs, and touring short films can be offered a one time 'buy out'. For instance. Audio Network offer buyout deals for students, where you can pay something daft like £1 to use tracks in your projects, which can then go to festivals etc.

Again, I don't fully know everything here as it's all rather complex, but what I do know is that if the composer is not on PRS, I can't use it as it basically can't be cleared. I'm not talking about 'my films', I'm talking about broadcast TV.
