I think this movie is misunderstood. People probably expected something more like Demonic Toys, but this is more like a John Waters film with an entire cast of oddball characters. It would be a strange movie even without the dolls, which are more of a plot device and not the main focus of the story, and it was probably hard to come up with a marketing angle compared to more straightforward horror/comedy fare like The Gingerdead Man. Some reviewers complained that it wasn't a conventional enough horror movie, but that's why it's good. Those critics seemed to be looking for a formula picture about killer dolls that go on a rampage until they're finally stopped; this isn't that. This is a much more interesting movie combining horror, soap opera, and musical elements. It's also a story with actual themes. Nothing terribly complex but to me this is a higher level of movie than Gingerdead Man, et. al. If you enjoy the bad ones then Blood Dolls is worth seeing twice. It has all the humor of an outlandishly bad movie but a surprising number of redeeming qualities as well. Featuring the late Debra Mayer, a future legend taken too soon.
